Knowing who your target audience is crucial. If you don’t know who your target audience is it will be extremely difficult to grow (and monetize) your blog. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be difficult to define your target audience, so let’s get started!
Finding Your Target Audience
One of the first steps to take is to create your ideal customer avatar or “buyer persona.” But what does that mean exactly? Basically you’re creating your target reader and to do so consider the following:
- Their age
- Location (rural, city)
- Income range
- Marital status, as well as if they’re a parent or not
- Where do they spend most of their time online?
- What problem of theirs are you trying to solve?
Being able to visualize your target reader will help you in creating content that is more personal and relevant.
Another step to take is to comment on popular blogs in the same niche as you. They’ve already done the hard work for you, and have found their (and your) target audience. By leaving engaging comments on their blog, you can begin to gather your own following.
You can apply this tactic to social media as well (Facebook groups, Instagram, Twitter.) Find who is considered an influencer in your niche and begin to interact with their followers. Many social media influencers have forgotten the “social” aspect and that’s where you can step in. Interacting with their followers will grow your own following and allow you to see the faces of your target audience.
Now, How Are You Going to Help Your Target Audience?
Discovering a problem to solve, also referred to as an audience’s “pain points,” is one of the most important questions you’re going to answer in discovering your target audience. Unfortunately the “If you build it, they will come” Field of Dreamsmantra doesn’t apply to blogging. Supplying high quality content is vital, but it isn’t enough if you want to expand your blog in any way.
You have to be able to identify an issue that your target audience faces, and one that you can solve with your product or advice.
This is when that visualization exercise comes in handy. What is your ideal target reader challenged by? If your target readers are working moms for instance, perhaps your blog offers advice for ways to manage time between family, work, and self care, or products that make busy moms life’s easier.
It can really be about whatever you want, just be sure it’s an actual problem that people struggle with (it’s typically unwise to try to create a problem to solve, rather tackle one that is being faced by many.) It’s a good idea to look at other established blogs that are in your niche. You can then know if other bloggers have succeeded in targeting your audience (and that you’re on the right track.)
Passion is key. You want to choose an audience that you are to write for. It’s going to be very difficult to feel inspired to blog consistently, and consistency is a must in the blogging world, if you’re not passionate about your niche and your audience.
